Testimonials and Birth Stories From Former Students of Mine

Do you want an amazing, empowering, exhilarating and enjoyable birth?

Amazing, empowering, exhilarating, enjoyable – these are not typically how you’d hear someone describe their birth.  But that is how I would describe mine.  The use of HypnoBirthing was the reason I use these words to describe my experiences. I have vivid memories of bringing my children into the world thanks to Janel and her teachings of HypnoBirthing (2005 & 2008).

Little did I know that my birth plan started taking shape when I was 12 years old.  I was sitting in the waiting room of my small, hometown hospital waiting to get an x-ray.  Down the hall in the emergency room I heard the screams of a small girl getting a spinal tap to check for meningitis.  My mother, being a nurse, was able to describe to me what was happening and what the procedure was.  It was that incident that put a great fear of needles into me.  Fast forward 16 years to when we were pregnant with our first child.  I had my mind made up that I wanted a drug-free birth in order to give our child a peaceful introduction to the world that awaited her.  My only choice for nourishment was also breast milk.  I would do anything that would me a better chance of successfully breastfeeding my child.

I was at a wedding reception when I was about 6 months pregnant with our first child.  I was speaking to the mother of a good friend.  She was currently a labor and delivery nurse and had been for many years.  I told her of my desire to have a drug-free birth and my fear of needles.  She quickly replied that the births she had attended that were successful in their quest for a peaceful, drug-free birth were those where the birth preparations included HypnoBirthing.  She explained what it was – as I had never heard of it.

When I returned home, I searched on the internet for HypnoBirthing and was overjoyed to find someone in my area (Janel) that taught it (although I would have been willing to drive hours for it).  I called Janel who promptly responded to all my questions and information I requested.  We decided to do the private lessons due to the challenges of coordinating 3 peoples’ schedules.  My husband and I met with Janel 4 times in our home.  We were both able to participate fully in the preparation.  She taught us what actually happens physically during birth and how to let your body do exactly what it does during birth if you just let it.  I continued to practice what Janel taught us and listened to my Rainbow Relaxation every night.  I must admit, I often fell asleep before completing it – it must have worked well.  I played it out loud on a clock radio CD that I purchased just for that purpose.  My husband was also able to listen to it so he understood exactly what I was listening to.  I wondered about the classes offered by the hospital specifically about birth preparation and Janel assured me that the HypnoBirthing was the only birthing class I’d need – and she was exactly right!

My OB doctor was also very supportive.  She asked what type of birth I wanted to have and what preparation I planned to do.  She had never heard of HypnoBirthing at the time, but asked me all about it.  She told me to let her know if there was anything she could do to help.  HypnoBirthing is a completely different way of birthing your child compared to what the majority of women I know have used.  Many people leave their birth plan and wishes up to someone else.  It was important for me to take full control over the birth of my baby.

I had a birth plan that made me want to wait and start the birthing process when my daughter chose.  I continued to work until a week after my ‘due date’.  The day came where I became extremely uncomfortable and could not sit or sleep despite many hours of walking and other ‘techniques’ as advised by others to start the birth process.  At the next appointment, I requested to be induced because of the extreme physical discomfort.  So the time came to birth my daughter.  I wasn’t sure what to expect.  The nurse taking care of me was Jennifer.  She was new to labor and delivery (6 mos) but had previously been a cardiac nurse, so I trusted her ability to deal with potential serious situations.  She had never attended a HypnoBirthing birth.  I settled into my birthing bed, turned off the lights, closed the curtains and took the clock off the wall.  It was time to put my training to use.  I had packed my crackers and some water (you don’t run a marathon without a snack and something to drink, do you?).  My husband snuck away to get a soda, candy bar since he was starting to fall asleep in the darkened room (it continues to be a longstanding joke).

I began doing the relaxation techniques.  After a couple hours I was checked and was at a 3.  Another hour passed.  I was going to be checked again but had to wait as several nurses where next door helping a mother birth her baby.  I was checked and said I was at 9.5.  My OB doctor came in since we were close and said I was at 5.  How in the world could the check right before that be so off?  My doctor expected it would be a while, so she was going to leave the hospital but stay within minutes when she was called.  After she left, I remember thinking – I’m not going to be able to do this all night.  I buckled down and resorted back to what I had learned.  I put on my headset, cranked my Gentle Surge CD and focused on the big red balloon imagery.  I quickly learned that being able to visualize Janel’s teaching of what was happening to my body was essential to my birth.  Within one hour, I was ready to birth.  My urge to push sent the nurses running to my room.  They called my Dr. immediately.  I held off pushing (a near impossible task) for about 7 minutes until she arrived.  I was willing to wait for her to arrive.  She walked into my room, walked into the gown and with one push, our daughter’s head was out.  With another push, she was born.  She weighed just over 7 lbs.  I didn’t require any sutures, but was given 2 just to avoid any issues of requiring them later.

My daughter latched on immediately.  The first pictures we have are of her lying on my chest and having her first nursing session.  You can see the elation on my face and the headphones in my ears.  I chuckle when I see that picture – remembering my devotion to my HypnoBirthing tools until the very end.

When it came time to birth my son 3+ years later, I was nervous that I wouldn’t remember the techniques.  I reread over the book and training.  Having a 3 year old and all the other craziness of a full-time + job left little time for other tasks.  I met with Janel over lunch and she assured me that if I reviewed the material and did the Rainbow Relaxation, I would just fall back into it and do fine.

Since I had already been through the birthing process, I felt I knew what to expect as far as the stages (starting with the assumption that the births would be relatively the same).  I was induced 2 days before my due date because I was extremely uncomfortable.  We had also moved to a different town since the birth of my daughter and were about 45 minutes away from the hospital in good traffic.  I didn’t want to risk having an even quicker birth on the way to the hospital.  I went in around 8am.  Since it was a Wednesday, my Dr. was in the office which is in the same location as the Labor and Delivery.  She had screens with the monitors so she could monitor my situation at any time from her office.  It was about a 3 minute walk to my room from her office when it would be time for her to come to my room for the birth.  The nurse tending to me during the day was told she should get an early lunch since they figured I’d have a quick birth.  My labor with my daughter was only 5 hours total.

Lunchtime came and went.  I was doing my relaxation techniques and not progressing as far as I expected.  The nurse commented that I was sleeping quite a bit.  I wonder how many births include a comment from the nurse that it seems the mother is sleeping quite a bit.  I think that shows what the deep relaxation can actually do for you during the birthing process.  Shift change came and I was elated to find Jennifer was my 2nd shift nurse.  She was told it was a HypnoBirthing birth.  She remembered my first birth, but hadn’t had one since.  She was surprised to find the same patient for her 2nd HypnoBirthing birth.  I continued to work through the surges in my favorite laboring furniture – the rocking chair.  I was checked around 3:30pm and was at a 6.  My Dr. was notified of my status and was prepared to come whenever they called.  Jennifer recognized I was getting close and knew that the 2nd part is often very quick.  She asked me to move back into the bed but I could continue to sit up on the break-away bed.  I was amazed later that she could pick up on that.

Less than an hour later I felt the urge to push.  They called my Dr. immediately and she started her walk down.  I felt I need to push and asked where she was.  They assured me she was walking down the hall.  They also said they were there and would take care of me if I felt I needed to push.  That was all I needed to hear.  One push and my son’s head was out - another push and his entire body was out.  My Dr. came in right after he was born.  She told me later that next time I’m at a 6, she is going to sit outside my door and just wait.

My son latched on immediately too.  He weighed almost 9 lbs.  I didn’t need any stitches and had no issues whatsoever.

Reliving both of my birth experiences truly brings back great memories for me.  My Dr. has never forgotten my birth and neither did Jennifer.  I was very lucky to have a have a birthing coach (Janel) and Dr. who was so supportive of my birth plan.  I wanted to wait to go into labor until nature decided it was time.  I wanted to have an unmedicated birth.  I wanted to bring my children into the world as peaceful as possible.  Although it was important for me to plan my births, it was also important to realize that I must be flexible if necessary.  I trust my OB Dr.  I knew if she gave me 3 options and let me choose, she would support whatever I decided.  I also trusted that if she told me I only had 1 option (ex. C-section) that I trusted that was really my only option.  That trust has been built up through many years of being a patient of hers and many other mothers who she has helped during their birthing process.  She delivers her own patients’ babies.  She also supports a mother’s desire to have natural births after previous difficult births – something many OB doctors aren’t even willing to discuss.  She truly is supportive of a mother’s wish to bring her baby into the world in a peaceful way.

HypnoBirthing via Janel’s training was an essential part of my birthing process.  I highly recommend HypnoBirthing taught by Janel to any mother who has the desire to birth their child in the most natural way possible and to give their child the best possible chance at a great breastfeeding experience.  Not only did it provide me a great birthing experience, but it gave me another gift that is useful when patience run low with my children or the stresses of work and life – the ability to completely relax myself in 5 seconds.  So almost 6 years since my first birth and over 2 years since my last, I’m left with fond memories of my births and a lifelong skill of self-relaxation.

Thanks, Janel, for contributing to my wonderful birthing experiences.  I hope many other mothers in my area get to experience your teachings and guidance so they can have amazing, empowering, exhilarating and enjoyable births like I was able to experience.  Birth is truly a gift, a miracle and something that should be appreciated.  Your teachings enable all of that and more.  Thanks Again!

With Gratitude, Molly

 Hi Janel~

We have a beautiful baby boy! We can't thank you enough for your instruction!  The hypnobirthing worked great and I was able to deliver naturally! It was a really neat experience and without fear of bursting the cysts.  My water broke Tuesday night and we went to hospital about 11. My strong contractions started around 2:30 and he was born at 4:53! We played your cd we borrowed from you during labor and it really helped me concentrate on my breathing.  Joe also helped so much~ it definitely was teamwork!  He was 6 lbs. 4oz. and 18 and 3/4 inches.  Thanks again for everything!  Hope all is well with you!  Tara & Joe

Thank you so much for all your help with getting Emily here. I'm so glad we took your hypnobirthing classes, it really helped Rob and I stay on the same page. When I seen you walk in the room when we were in labor it was a huge relief! I think my Mom was about to lose it until you came and helped, she couldn't praise you enough afterwards!

I took Janel's class when I was pregnant with my first child. As a woman, you hear so many negative stories about childbirth, but the Hypnobirthing class completely changed my mindset about how childbirth could be. I enjoyed practicing the relaxation methods throughout my pregnancy

I developed pre-eclampsia and the decision was made to induce delivery three weeks early. I began using the hypnobirthing methods I had learned. It was amazing. Despite all the monitoring and medical interventions, I was extremely relaxed and felt confidant that the birthing process would be smooth and pain-free. During the contractions, I felt pressure, but truly no pain. I felt no fear, and felt very relaxed and connected throughout the process. My son was born, alert and content. It was a wonderful experience.

Two years later, I was pregant again, but this time with twins. I developed pre-eclampsia again, and I was induced at 37 weeks again. I used the hypnobirthing methods and felt very relaxed and unstressed (despite the monitoring, and crowd of medical staff and nursing students that had gathered to watch a twin delivery) It was a quick and easy birthing process. The nurses told me that I was the first twin delivery they had seen without an epidural.

Hypnobirthing was amazing. I recommend it to all of my pregnant friends.

Big OP Baby Born At Birth Center

We don't believe in a "due date" so when anyone asked when our baby was due we would nonchalently say "oh, the end of April". With my older two children coming at least a week before we expected, I assumed our third would follow suit. We were told that third babies were tricky. And we should have listened. I had a beautiful, uncomplicated pregnancy but had a lot of outside stress. My husband was graduating from college, we were moving to a new city and didn't know where we were going to live. But fortunately I had decided to take Janel's Hypnobirth class. I know for certain that if not for the class and our belief in what it taught, I would have ended up in a hospital bed. Janel came to our home for the class, and it was so relaxing. We practiced relaxation techniques and I still love the massage (if I can talk my husband into doing it).

We had moved 1 1/2 hours away from our midwife, Nancy, so I had a lot of anxiety that I wouldn't get to her birthcenter while in labor. Around 4am on April 29th, I heard a "pop" that woke me from sleep. I felt a little trickle of water and smiled, knowing I would get to meet our baby very soon. I went back to sleep and woke about 7. I called the midwife and told her that my contractions had started but weren't too close. I felt very aware of everything and like I was full of magic. Strange I know. :) We called my mother, who was going with us and she came over. We loaded our two older children, ages 5 and almost 2 into my parent's minivan with me in the back seat at 8am with the contractions picking up.

The bumpy highway was starting to make me panic but I turned on "rainbow relaxation" and listened to my affirmations. I had figured out how many contractions I would probably have during the trip and was surprised that I still had 4 left when we reached our midwife's birthcenter. Someone had a leadfoot. He told me later that I wasn't making much noise and was afraid that I was so relaxed that I would have the baby and he wouldn't even know it.

The midwife had a warm jacuzzi waiting. Upon my first exam, (first one of the whole pregnancy) my cervix was open to 6cm. I figured I would have the baby by lunch time, get cleaned up and back home for supper. But during the exam, we found that baby was face up. The midwife attempted to turn the baby internally-not fun. Baby would not turn. I had a lot of pressure in my low back due to the baby's position. Hypnobirth got me through that too. The midwife and her assistant (Janel) determined that not only was the baby face up but very large too. They had me get on my hands and knees and this took off a lot of pressure.

Breathing my baby out. What a wonderful way to bring baby into the world rather than pushing till I was dizzy. The midwife let me know when to reach down to receive my baby as he came into our world. I breathed out a 10 lb. 11oz. 23.75 inch long baby boy. Face up. He had a loop of cord around his neck that I took off myself as he came out. If he had been turned, that loop would have been a noose. Thank you innate.

I had no tears but had a lot of bleeding. Nursing and a threat of getting a shot stopped that. He was born at 2:44pm and nursed like nature intended. We left him as nature intended too, with his foreskin and without poisons. His daddy, a Chiropractor, checked him out that day. We napped, ate and cleaned up. Drove home with my new baby beside me in a carseat and got home about 12am.I used Hypnobirth techniques with the birth of my next child, a boy, who weighed 10lbs. 12oz. and was 22" long. His was only a 8 hour birth. And also for our last child, a girl, who was born after only 5 hours weighing 9lbs. 6oz and 21.5" long. But you'd never know it now. They're all skinny and still tall!

I'm sorry I didn't send this earlier but you know how busy it can be with a new baby.
I wanted to let you know that I had the baby, Brady, on Sept. 14. He was 9lb 3 oz and 21 inches. My surges started on the 12th and I had him at 8:02 am on Sunday.
I just wanted to thank you for teaching the Hypnobirth to me. Because of it, I didn't have to use any drugs. The way I wanted it to be. The only thing I used was the Sterile water injections in my back because of the back pain. (The injections were the worst part of the whole thing.)
I can't say that I was as comfortable as the women in the videos you showed us but I was able to work through every surge and the birth. I overheard the midwife and the nurses say that they thought I was sleeping because I was so calm and quiet.

First Time Mom Has A Great Birth

Hi Janel. Just wanted to take some time and email you about my birth experience. Kevin and I were in your October class of hypnobirthing. I have to admit that I was a little hesitant about how well hypnobirthing would work and as I got closer to my time, I began to get more and more anxious - but I continued to practice my relaxation and breathing and listen to my tapes.

On December 11th at 12:30 AM I woke up with some discomfort in my back - like I couldn't get comfortable. Pretty soon I began feeling what felt like menstrual cramps - they were coming every six minutes. I woke up Kevin and told him I thought something might be happening. I decided to go back to bed and try to get some sleep.

The "cramps" continued to come every six minutes and by 6:00 AM they were closer to four minutes. We called our midwife (Gayle) and she said she was already headed to the hospital for two other births in progress. She left it up to me what I wanted to do- I decided to stay at home longer since I wasn't in much discomfort.

I decided to get out of bed and move around to get things moving quicker. I alternated from walking, to sitting in my rocking chair to sitting on my birthing ball. All the while the cramps were coming between 4 minutes and two minutes apart. As I felt each one, I did my deep breathing and stayed relaxed. I was not feeling at all that they were painful - just noticeable. I wanted to get them a little stronger so we did nipple stimulation for a while. This really helped up the intensity and my cramps were definitely stronger and a consistent two minutes apart. I still was feeling quire relaxed and wasn't sure I was truly in labor. I was convinced I would go to the hospital and be sent home for false labor.

We were calling Gayle throughout the day for updates- finally at 12:00 PM I told Kevin that if at 1:00 PM I was still experiencing the same intensity of cramps that I wanted to go the hospital to at least be checked. As we were getting ready to walk out the door at 1:15 my water broke. I felt panic begin- but Kevin was there to reassure me that it was perfectly natural and alright that my water had broke and I began relaxing on the way to the hospital. Half way to Genesis ( we only live about ten minutes away) I told Kevin I had to push. We got to the hospital and the urge to push was very strong.

We had to take the elevator up to the fifth floor. By now I was feeling like I would explode if I didn't push and everyone on the elevator was staring at me in horror thinking I would deliver right then and there. I was trying to just pant and grunt a little. When we got to the OB floor they put me in a triage room and asked me to change into a gown- this seemed impossible to me since all I wanted to do was push. Kevin finally found a nurse and told her I was pushing. I was checked and was instantly brought into a birthing room. A few minutes later my midwife came in and said " Carrie, you are complete. I see hair, start pushing! : ) I could hardly believe how fast everything was moving. As each surge came I felt the need to push and did so. A half hour later Brett Chad was born. We were admitted to the hospital at 1:40 PM and Brett was born at 2:16 PM.

Everyone was amazed at how far I had come at home and that I hadn't felt uncomfortable before. They all remarked about how easy it seemed for me and that I should feel lucky. In all actuality I did labor for 14 hours but it never seemed like I was in intense labor. I was using the relaxation breathing - sleep breathing - and I listened to my relaxation tape one time earlier in the morning - otherwise I was saving the deep relaxation techniques for the hospital when I thought the "real labor" would take place!!! I was in true labor the entire time and really didn't realize it! All my friends and relatives are amazed by my story and jealous too. They say "Oh you are so lucky you had it so easy" I just think to myself that they could have it that way too. I think hypnobirthing is awesome and have recommended it to a few of my newly pregnant friends. Brett Chad is a calm, loving baby who came into the world peacefully and wide awake. He is truly an angel baby - only cries when he is hungry and is already sleeping 4 to 5 hours a night.

I would like for you to share my story with the other couples from our class and with any other classes you currently have. I am still amazed and convinced that hypnobirthing made my birth a positive and powerful experience. Thank you for offering such a great service!

Janel, I just wanted to thank you for being a part of my BEST birthing experience EVER!!!! I
just can't thank you enough Sweetie!!! After 5 LONG and painful labors, this was by far the most relaxed I have ever been, and as a result it went so very fast!!! Thank you for being my Labor nurse!!!

I have my last birth story posted on my QC HypnoBirthing Facebook page -- it's under notes.  Janel

Janel...I cannot say enough about how thankful I am that I found you. The personal time you offered my husband and myself was exactly what we needed. You provided all the information and knowledge I needed to refresh my memory being a second time hypno mom. You are so sweet and kind...but most of all your gentle demeanor helped me in find that relaxed state of mind I remember all too well. There is no better experience than birthing your baby. I will forever remember our experience with you and cherish the relationship you shared with not only my husband and me, but with our unborn baby . Aida is now three months old and I would do it over and over again. Thank you, Janel for your guidance and support...your knowledge and care.
